Olympic diary

The men ‘s football tournament came to life with plenty of goals. Fiji, who have never won an Olympic medal went in just a goal down at half time against South Korea only to fall apart in the second period and end up losing 8-0. One of the best games of the day was the 2-2 draw between Germany and Mexico while Nigeria beat Japan 5.4.

Rather less exciting was the goal less draw beween the hosts and South Africa. Not a good result for Neymar and co, especially as the South Africans played most of the second half with 10 men.

The games proper begin tomorrow with 12 gold medals to be won. In addition, both the GB hockey teams will be in action, as will the GB women’s rugby 7s team who have two matches, against Brazil and Japan.
