It is interesting to reflect that controversy surrounding whip bans is nothing new. Some years back AP McCoy was riding Pridwell in the Aintree Hurdle and just got up to pip Charlie Swan on the great Istabraq in a photo finish.
Racing Post readers voted it the ride of the season but the stewards were less impressed and handed McCoy a 4 day ban, later increased to 6 on appeal, for excessive use of the whip.
