Diary: April 4 2007

Although there are all sorts of delights on the jumps racing horizon it’s all flat racing tomorrow.

For the benefit of his fan club who may be reading these notes I see that old Legal Set runs in the seller at Catterick tomorrow (2.20). His glory days are rather in the distant past and his current losing runs stands at 37.

Halla San has served been a good friend to this site and makes his seasonal reappearance in the 3.20.  He could well have another profitable season but may need a little more give in the ground. Another interesting runner is Monolith who is fit6 from hurdling.

Hawridge Prince looks a promising stayer and I will be watching him closely in the 4.10 at Nottingham. He is a course winner but may find this trip just too short for him.  The other one I like in this is Mount Kilimanjaro who has some decent form last season.

Dumas could be something of a dark horse in the 5.10.

See you tomorrow

Diary: April 3 2007

The only runner from our list to follow on Tuesday is Prince of Slane in the 4.50 at Wertherby. He has been pretty disappointing so far this season and could only finish 5th last time out, over course and distance.

He has his favoured ground and has also gone down 6 lbs in the weights so can’t be ruled out.

Diary: April 2 2007

It was an in and out weekend on the tipping front.  Rising Shadow was my main fancy for the Cammidge Trophy and he duly prevailed.  That was his 3rd success at Newcastle so he obviously likes the place.  I thought at one stage that our old friend Sierra Vista was going to hang on in front but she was reeled in close home.  It was another stout performance from this admirable mare though.  She had also won twice at Newcastle previously.

My Lincoln fancies were Audience (6th at 20/1) and Rio Riva (2nd at 10/1) Rio Riva was the first home of the horses drawn in single figures and looks one to keep on the right side.

Eisteddfod won on his first try at the all weather taking the conditions stakes at Kempton.  Eisteddfod is out of the very successful broodmare Ffestiniog, a winner of 4 races in her own right, including a listed event at Newbury.  All 4 of her progeny that have run to date have won.  Apart from Eisteddfod, two of his siblings are in training in this country, the 3 year old Tredegar and unraced juvenile Harlech Castle.  These two are worth putting in the note book for future reference.

Both of the horses from our list to follow that ran on Sunday, Pepperoni Pete and Double Default were winners.  There are no runners from the list in action tomorrow.

Diary: March 31 & April 1 2007

Lord Henry was the only runner from our list to follow today and he won at Ascot to maintain his 100% record over fences.  He could well be one to look out for at Aintree where ground and track should suit.

There is a real mixed bag of racing over the weekend, really something for everyone.

I will start with Newcastle where the turf flat season gets under way with the traditional opener, The Lincoln, switched to the Tyneside track this year.

Our old friend Zero Tolerance heads the weights with 9 stone 10.  He is probably weighted up to the hilt but would still have a chance if the ground were to ride on the soft side.  He was 4th last year off 103 and is now running off a mark 1 lb higher.  That was in pretty soft ground at Redcar though.  Last year’s winner, Blythe Knight, also appreciated the soft ground that day. He has been running well over hurdles since and is only 3 lbs higher in the handicap.  Both Zero Tolerance and Blythe Knight might find the ground just not quite soft enough to overcome their higher weights.

Rio Riva has been laid out for this and goes well fresh.  He seems to go on any ground and is consistent.  I wouldn’t rule him out but coming from stall 7 he may not have the best of the draw.

I am going to look at those drawn high for my main fancies.  The giant Gentleman’s Deal won at Lingfield last Saturday and must be on the shortlist.  He has won his last 4 on the bounce but they were on the all weather.  His record on turf is not as good.

Mutawaffer is drawn 20 but is on a losing streak of 19. Despite that the handicapper does not seem to want to drop him too much and I am going to pass him over.  Audience is the sort that seems to pop up at a big price from time to time.  I remember a 33/1 success a couple of years ago.  He is not badly handicapped and there are worse each way shouts.  My Paris might try to make all from stall 19.  He is another on a fair mark but historically does not win at this time of year.  Selection time! To be honest I am not confident but at the prices I must just take a chance with Audience each way.  Rio Riva is worth a saver in case the experts have the draw bias wrong.

Rising Shadow should have conditions to suit in the 3.15.  He has never won first time out before however.  Pivotal Flame is the other one I like in this.

Cadwell stepped up on previous efforts last time out when 2nd on the all weather.  He is an interesting runner in the 4.30.

Princess Valerina won a 6 furlong maiden last season for Barry Hills.  Looked the type to improve at 3 and should get the mile OK in the Kempton 2.25.

Water Mill looked potentially useful when winning at Kempton on his only start last term.  He is back at Kempton for the 2.55.  He is trained by Andrew Balding whose father won this race in 2000.

At Nad Al Sheeba, Youmzain and Best Alibi are of interest in the Sheema Classic.

The main jumping action comes from Ascot where young Rachel Green may have a winner with Fountain Crumble in the 3.40.  She is well worth her 7 lbs claim.

There are plenty of old favourites in the 4.15, such as Fork Lightning and Mister McGoldrick.  Tamarinbleu represents our current list to follow though and has a realistic chance based on his win at Ascot in December.  He is quite versatile with regards to trip and he goes well fresh.

Barry Fenton won on Roznic for our list to follow this week and I am hoping he can do the same on Presenting Express in the 4.50. Emma Lavelles’s charge is a bit high in the weights but should really appreciate the ground and is normally a good weight carrier..  If he gets into a rhythm he could go well.

Another that should like the better ground is Paul Nicholls’ Earth Man in the 5.25.  He has had injury problems and this will be his last run over hurdles before he goes chasing.  Warningcamp looks the one to beat in this though. He won well at Wincanton last time and there may be more to come.

We have a couple of interesting runners from our jumps list to follow on Sunday.  Up at Hexham Double Default looks the one to beat in the 3.40.  He is only really marking time over hurdles as his future lies over the larger obstacles but he does look the one to beat here nonetheless.

Pepperoni Pete has been very disappointing on his last 2 runs but a break, a tongue tie and better ground might well do the trick in the 2.20 at Newton Abbot.

I will be back on Sunday evening.

Diary: March 30 2007

The Elite Racing Club has enjoyed a successful jumps season with most of their winter team registering a win.  Inherent added to the club’s tally today winning over hurdles at Towcester this afternoon. A former4 bumper winner she tends to race a little keenly but hopefully will settle better when she gains’ more experience.

The turf flat season starts on Saturday so I am looking out for pointers from the all weather races this week. The latest to catch my eye was Captain Jacksparra a winner over 7 furlongs at Lingfield today.  He looked one to watch when 4th on his debut last year behind a horse called Ebn Reem and he is certainly one for the notebook.

Lord Henry was an impressive winner over fences in the summer.  He was useful over hurdles but always looked likely to make a better chaser.  He runs in the 2.55 at Ascot and should have conditions to suit.  Royal Shakespeare is the obvious danger.  He is the only runner from our list to follow tomorrow.

Some winners give you more pleasure than others.  Roznic was one that I got a particular “buzz from today.  He is one of the “darker” horses on my list to follow, from one of the less fashionable yards.  He did the job well at Kempton this afternoon with his jockey Barry Fenton judging his effort to perfection.  Roznic’s previous wins had all come with cut in the ground and today he handled the faster surface well.

I see that Stoop to Conquer won over hurdles today.  He is a horse I have always liked and was a fair stayer on the flat for John Dunlop.  There should be more races to be won with him under both disciplines.

The new flat season is almost upon us so I need to take some notice of the results on the level.  I see that Mount Hermon won today on the AW.  He looked promising as a juvenile and looks one to follow.

My main focus tomorrow will be on Elite Racing Club runner Inherent in the 4.30 at Towceester.  She won a bumper when trained by Clive Cox and was 2nd on her hurdles debut for new trainer Henry Daly.

See you tomorrow

I had high hopes of Urban Tiger at the start of the season.  Twice a winner on the flat he looked a likely type for a hurdles campaign. After 3 runs he is yet to get of the mark however and he has been somewhat disappointing.  His two wins of the flat came on good to firm so it is possible that better going over hurdles may see an improvement.  He runs in the 2.55 at Kempton.

Roznic won 3 times in quick succession last season but has not recaptured that sort of form this term.  There was some promise on his last run when 3rd at Fakenham though.  He runs in 4.35.  His 3 wins lasts season were all on soft ground.

Diary: March 26 2007

Our list to follow supplied 3 winners in Saturday. Karello Bay proved the best of our 3 runners in the mare’s novice hurdle final at Newbury, winning with something in hand.  Miss Mitch stayed on well in 2nd and she looks to have a future over fences.

Alderburn defied top weight to land the opener at the Berkshire track under Tony McCoy, having a little too much class for her rivals.  At Bangor-on-Dee Annie’s Answer won for the second time this season over hurdles with Tony Dobbin doing the steering.  The best of our other runners was Snap Tie who was second in the bumper under a penalty.

On the flat the giant Gentleman’s Deal took time off from his stud duties to land the valuable Winter Derby. Elsewhere on the Lingfield card King Orchisios notched his 4th career win.  He is one of those horses that always seems to win at a nice price. His 4 wins have come at 5/1, 9/1, 20/1 and 8/1.

There is nothing much that takes my eye about Monday’s racing.  I will be looking out for Sha Bihan in the 4.00 at Stratford.  He is owned by the Elite Racing Club (and therefore partly by me!)  He put up a good performance on his last run when 2nd at Newbury and runs off the same mark at Stratford.  I am hopeful of a good run.

That is about it for today.
