Carlisle

2.45 Ballybough Pat won a bumper at Ffos Las last season and looks a good prospect for hurdles. He should handle the ground as he won a point to point on heavy.

5.00 Attaglance won over hurdles at both the Cheltenham and Aintree festivals and makes his chase debut here. He has yet to win on testing ground which may be a slight concern. Rival D’Estruval has experience over fences having finished 2nd at Ayr in April. Still a novice he looks sure to win over fences. Dark Glacier won twice over hurdles last season, besting Rival D’Estruval at Newcastle, and is another that should make a chaser. All 3 have the potential to make an impact over fences and a selection would be largely guesswork. Attaglance would be my choice if pushed.

5.30 Irish points winner Blackwater King looks an interesting recruit for Donald McCain.

Not much to get excited about at Ludlow. In the closing bumper at 5.10 Abruzzi, runner up at Fontwell, looks sure to go well.

Hazy Tom is an interesting recruit to chasing. He runs in the Towcester 2.50 where the stiff track should suit him. The ground is good to firm though which may not be ideal. At 6/4 he is probably not really value.

A quite day all in all.

Ascot

3.05 Mince is a progressive sort and looks the likely winner. At a bigger price Eton Rifles has an each way chance.

3.35 I am going for a complete outsider in this, Brae Hill each way.

4.10 Once again it is worth taking a chance on an outsider. At 20/1 Ponty Aclaim is worth a small interest each way.

4.45 Free Verse each way.

Fontwell

2.20 I am quite keen on Meganisi in this. Well regarded by his trainer he will handle the ground and looks a good prospect.3.25 Oscar Davy, a course and distance winner is one for the short list, as is Imperial Cup winner Paintball. The latter has a lot of weight for a small horse and I will just give the edge to Oscar Davy.

Newmarket

1.10 Of those that have run Tarikhi looks the pick. The unraced Tajheez also looks interesting.

3.55 There is a good word for Deficit.

Diary: October 5 2012

The main meeting tomorrow is on the flat at Ascot. In the opener at 2.20 Tartiflette should handle the ground and has some decent form despite not winning this season. In the 3.30 Silver Lime comes into the race in good form.

At Fontwell the 2.40 should be between First Fandango and There’s No Panic. The latter returns to the track after a long absence. It is early days for Paul Nicholls but he may have a winner with course and distance winner Current Event who handles good and soft ground. In the 5.35 Rebecca Curtis runs dual bumper winner Rendl Beach who looks an interesting recruit to the hurdling ranks.

Up at Hexham in the 3.40 On Broadway is a strong stayer and a course and distance winner. The 4.50 could come a bit early for Dotties Dilemma who is probably still in need of further experience but this is certainly one for the notebook after winning a point to point and a bumper.

Bangor

2.50 Benheir won twice over hurdles last season and makes his chase debut here. Cross of Honour looks the likely danger.

3.20 Right to Rule, a winner at Newcastle on the flat looks the type to win over hurdles.

4.50 Mirific has had injury problems over the years but if fully fit would have a chance here at a decent price.

Chester

4.40 Deia Sunrise has course form and has handled soft ground in the past.

Haydock

3.50 Oojooba is a course winner and ran well at Salisbury last time out.

4.25 Party Line is consistent and has an each way chance.

Newmarket

1.55 Fantastic Moon is unbeaten and comes from a stable bang in form.

3.40 Mijhaar, Silvery Moon and Chil the Kite are my main fancies,

5.25 Rayvin Black, Sun Central, Perennial, Saytara and Trader Jack make up my rather long short list! Sun Central, Perennial and Trader Jack for my final answer, in that order.

Haydock

2.00 Pallasator is a lightly raced improver and looks the one to beat. Gabrial’s Star is not without a chance at a bigger price as he may well be suited by the ground.

4.45 Kyllachy Star is on a promising handicap mark.

Newmarket

2.20 Trumpet Major looks the most likely winner but Much Improved is another to consider.

3.25 Guesswork here really but Dare to Achieve and Hornboy look interesting.

4.35 Norse Blues looks on a reasonable mark and has an each way chance if turning out again after his run today.

Newmarket

2.00 Space Ship, Telescope and Elkaayed all have claims on what they have shown so far. Telescope would be my pick but all 3 could go on to better things.

4.50 Norse Blues could go well at a decent price. The ground should suit and he has come down the weights a bit.

5.25 It might be worth taking a chance on Swan Song.
