Russellform Ramblings

Osana and Tidal Bay were winners from our list to follow at Cheltenham this afternoon.  Tidal Bay has a very consistent record, never finishing out of the first 2.  He carries his head rather high and I think that makes his jumping look a bit awkward at times.  He seems to get from side of his fences to the other well enough though.

Osana put himself firmly in the Champion Hurdle picture beating some of the leading contenders including the reigning champion Sublimity.  There was a sad postscript to this race with the aftal accident to Mac’s Joy.  He was described by his trainer as a “little tiger” and he was all of that.  He is best remembered for some titanic battles with his arch rivals Hardy Eustace, Harchibald and Brave Inca.  He will be missed,

Horses running from our main list to follow

Cheltenham 12.20 – Francoek

Cheltenham 2.05 – Tidal Bay & Predateur

Cheltenham 2.40 – New Little Bric & Abragante

Cheltenham 3.10 – Katchit, Osana & Afsoun

Doncaster 12.05 – Otage de Brion

Doncaster 2.55 – Cloudy Lane

Doncaster 3.25 – Kings Quay & Classic Gold

Lingfield 2.30 – Michael Muck

Horses running from our “dark horses” list

Doncaster 12.35 – Ordre De Bataille

Lingfield 2.30 – Labelthou

Russellform Ramblings

The Boylesports Gold Cup has been won by a 6, 7 or 8 year old in the last 10 years.  Only one horse has won at odds of bigger than 10/1 and no winner carried more than 11 stone 3.  Those trends give both Newe Little Bric and Abrogante leading chances.  The ground will suit the David Pipe horse and the stable have been in good form of late. My slight preference though is for New Little Bric who should be all the better for his run at Ascot last month and is open to improvement.

Francoek has looked impressive in his runs over hurdles so far and will be hard to beat in the 12.20 at Cheltenham.

Paul Nicholls speaks very highly of Predateur who has been likened to Flagship Uberalles.  I don’t think it would be fair to judge him on his 2nd to Moon Over Miami at Cheltenham last month as the ground was probably too soft for him and I am expecting a better showing today.  For my selection in the 2.05 though I am going to stick with Howard Johnson’s Tidal Bay who has form figures at Cheltenham of 1221.

In the 3.10 I can’t really find a good reason to oppose Sublimity.  Although Afsoun and Katchit both have the benefit of a run (two runs in Katchit’s case) Sublimity has run well fresh before and he has to be the selection.

At Fairyhouse I fancy Kazal in the 2.25.

Horses running from our main list to follow

Cheltenham 12.45 – Imperial Commander & Ornais

Cheltenham 1.20 Simon & Blue Splash

Cheltenham 3.40 – Calgary Bay

Doncaster 2.15 – Tot ‘o Whisky & Tazbar

Horses running from our “dark horses” list

Cheltenham 3.40 – Snap Tie

Doncaster 2.50 – Opus Cafe

Russellform Ramblings

The 12.45 at Cheltenham has only attracted 4 runners but all the quartet have chances.  The pair from our list to follow look the most likely winners and both were impressive winners on their last outings. Imperial Commander likes Cheltenham having won there 3 times from 6 visits but it would of course take a brave man to oppose a Paul Nicholls runner at the moment

In the 1.20 the ground has probably gone against Simon but Blue Splash shouldn’t be inconvenienced by it and seems to be on the upgrade.  At 7/1 he would be my each way suggestion.

Snap Tie runs well at Cheltenham (he was 2nd to Imperial Commander there in a bumper earlier in his career).  He should go well in the 3.40.  Calgary Bay has shown some ability on his starts so far and with AP McCoy in the saddle could be an each way possibility.

Furmigadelagiusta makes his hurdles bow in the 12.00 at Doncaster.  He won a couple of times on the flat and was rated 89. He could be the sort to do well over timber.

Horses running from our main list to follow

Huntingdon 3.00 – Amir El Jabal

Taunton 1.20 – Mole’s Chamber

Taunton 3.50 – Not Left Yet & Boyastara

Russellform Ramblings

The Dartnall yard are going well as evidenced by recent wins from Benetwood and Lodge Lane from our list to follow.  Mole’s Chamber runs for that yard in the Taunton 1.20 and should start at fair odds given the presence of a couple of fancied runners from big stables.  There might be a doubt about Mole’s Chamber’s ability to get the trip but if he stays he looks value.

I see that Not Left Yet, who runs in the handicap hurdle at Taunton has an entry in the Welsh National over Christmas.

Nap of the day

Colisay – 1.50 Taunton

Today’s trivia

Warsaw Pact runs in the Ludlow 1.40.  When trained on the flat by Sir Mark Prescott ran up a hat trick of wins in the space of 10 days in 2006.

What’s in a name?

Sandy Denny (Ludlow 3.40) is presumably named after the folk/rock singer who was with the band Fairport Convention and who died in 1978.

The Last Hero

The wind blew out from Bergen from the dawning to the day,
There was a wreck of trees and fall of towers a score of miles away,
And drifted like a livid leaf I go before its tide,
Spewed out of house and stable, beggared of flag and bride.
The heavens are bowed about my head, shouting like seraph wars,
With rains that might put out the sun and clean the sky of stars,
Rains like the fall of ruined seas from secret worlds above,
The roaring of the rains of God none but the lonely love.
Feast in my hall, O foemen, and eat and drink and drain,
You never loved the sun in heaven as I have loved the rain.

The chance of battle changes — so may all battle be;
I stole my lady bride from them, they stole her back from me.
I rent her from her red-roofed hall, I rode and saw arise,
More lovely than the living flowers the hatred in her eyes.
She never loved me, never bent, never was less divine;
The sunset never loved me, the wind was never mine.
Was it all nothing that she stood imperial in duresse?
Silence itself made softer with the sweeping of her dress.
O you who drain the cup of life, O you who wear the crown,
You never loved a woman's smile as I have loved her frown.

The wind blew out from Bergen to the dawning of the day,
They ride and run with fifty spears to break and bar my way,
I shall not die alone, alone, but kin to all the powers,
As merry as the ancient sun and fighting like the flowers.
How white their steel, how bright their eyes! I love each laughing knave,
Cry high and bid him welcome to the banquet of the brave.
Yea, I will bless them as they bend and love them where they lie,
When on their skulls the sword I swing falls shattering from the sky.
The hour when death is like a light and blood is like a rose, —
You never loved your friends, my friends, as I shall love my foes.

Know you what earth shall lose to-night, what rich uncounted loans,
What heavy gold of tales untold you bury with my bones?
My loves in deep dim meadows, my ships that rode at ease,
Ruffling the purple plumage of strange and secret seas.
To see this fair earth as it is to me alone was given,
The blow that breaks my brow to-night shall break the dome of heaven.
The skies I saw, the trees I saw after no eyes shall see,
To-night I die the death of God; the stars shall die with me;
One sound shall sunder all the spears and break the trumpet's breath:
You never laughed in all your life as I shall laugh in death.

Hexham 12.50 – Bywell Beau

Hexham 1.50 – Shrewd Investor

Hexham 2.20 – Gunner Jack

Russellform Ramblings

I have watched the video of the Tingle Creek 3 times now and Twist Magic seems to get better each time!  He certainly travelled and jumped faultlessly and stands as a worthy favourite for the Queen Mother Champion Chase in March.  Voy Por Ustedes supporters can point to that horse’s record at Cheltenham where his form figures read 112and if both horses stay fit the big race should be something to really look forward to.

Elsewhere I see that Keith Reveley won the Borders National at Kelso with Rambling Minster at 25/1. His mother trained the grey A Piece of Cake to win the same race in 2003 at 20/1.

By the way I am on a winning run of 8 naps!

Exeter 1.35 – Lead On

Sandown 1.55 – Lightning Strike, Kealshore Boy & Nakai

Horses running from our “dark horses” list

Exeter 2.45 – Planet of Sound

Russellform Ramblings

Lead On was let down by his jumping on his chase debut at Newbury but if he can improve in that department he should be good enough in the 1.35 at Exeter.

The Sandown 1.55 looks a hot novice hurdle. Kealshore Boy cost Graham Wylie 290,000 guineas after showing some very smart bumper form last season.  He probably would have won on his hurdling debut at Carlisle if he hadn’t taken a heavy fall at the last. Point to point winner Nakai was an easy winner on his hurdles bow at Chepstow and is highly regarded.  With both trainers in excellent form these two should give a good account but my selection is Lightning Strike who beat subsequent winner Tazbar at Haydock last month.  Tony McCoy rides which is another plus.

Planet of Sound beat The Package at Chepstow and that horse has since franked the form.

There are some notable debutants in the bumper at Exeter (3.50). Billie Magern is a full brother to Ollie Magern while Cricket Boy’s dam, Lady Cricket won some notable races including the Thomas Pink Gold Cup and the Game Spirit Chase.

The big race at Sandown on Saturday is of course the Tingle Creek.  This features Voy Por Ustedes, Monet’s Garden and Twist Magic.  Monet’s Garden has won 13 of his 20 career starts and has never fallen.  Voy Por Ustedes has not been out of the first 2 in any of his last 10 completed starts, while Twist Magic, from the all conquering Nicholls yard is on a hat trick.

Monet’s Garden is possibly best at two and a half miles and Twist Magic is not a certain starter and has a bit to find anyway.  Voy Por Ustedes looks the one to beat.

Leicester 2.30 – Blue Bajan

Russellform Ramblings

Scarvagh Diamond made it an unprecedented 5 naps in a row yesterday.  I am hoping that Blue Bajan can continue the good run tomorrow.  He was useful on the flat winning the City and Suburban Handicap at Epsom and going on to run Maraahel close in a Group 3 at Chester.  He looked good on his return to hurdles at Ascot last week when he finished 2nd and that should put him spot on for this.

The other one I like tomorrow is Pop who runs in the 1.20 at Market Rasen.  Pop showed potential in a couple of starts in bumpers last season and confirmed that promise when 3rd over hurdles at Warwick.
